What about CoQ10?
Question: from Addie
Hi Warren, what is your opinion on Coq10? What's the best one to buy?
Answer: from Warren
CoQ10 is an essential nutrient and very important for heart health.
It is manufactured by the liver and only a very small amount comes from dietary sources. However, a good diet can help provide the raw ingredients to enable your liver to produce an ample supply.
But, if you are on a statin drug then you must supplement with CoQ10 because the pathway that a statin drug blocks in order to prevent your liver from making so much cholesterol is the same as that used to produce CoQ10.
So, if you use a statin drug your body will produce less than it is using each day and a deficiency will be the result as your body’s reserves of CoQ10 are used up. And that is more serious than elevated cholesterol itself.
If you are not on a statin you still need to be conscious of the need for CoQ10 as the body becomes less efficient at producing it as it ages. Therefore you must ensure that you do have adequate amounts.
There are two ways to do this.
One is to make an effort in ensuring that your body has an adequate supply of the raw nutrients so the liver can manufacture CoQ10 effectively. This should always be done irrespective whether you adopt the second way or not.
These raw nutrients are part of a complex bio-chemical process. Prof. Dr Munem Daoud who has been our chief researcher for the last 10 years is aware of these processes and as a result we have ensured that all versions of Total Balance over the last 10 years contained these essential raw nutrients.
The second way of course is direct supplementation with CoQ10. CoQ10 is very sensitive and to be effective should be bound with specific form of vitamins and other nutrients. We do this when we use CoQ10 in both Total Balance and Cardio-Klenz.
If supplementing it is also important that you only use the type which is produced using fermentation. This is bio-technology process.
If I was buying a CoQ10 supplement on its own I would be inclined to find a sublingual form of fermented CoQ10 for maximum bio-availability. The CoQ10 in our supplements is very absorbable as it is protected on its way to the upper intestine by enteric coating.

I currently use the Men's daily fluid and deep cleansing mask, both are by far better than anything I have used in the past. I am struggling to find a good daily cleanser though. I have came across another New Zealand skincare company called "Living Nature" and was thinking about giving their daily cleanser a try until, hopefully : ) your company makes one. My question is would it be practical to use the deep cleansing mask on a daily basis but leaving it on the skin just a few minutes?
thanks much,
Brad
Living Nature is a good company with good products. It could be a good option for a cleanser in the meantime.
No, I would not be a good idea to use is daily. You would get better results just using it weekly and leaving it on for the full 20 - 30 minutes.
Thanks
I think that you should try just the deep cleansing mask and see how you get on before adding anything extra.
Thanks,
Bruce
Yes there is a test to measure CoQ10 in the body. I am not familiar with the details at the moment but I will check into it early in the New Year.
I do know that the body only needs about 5 - 10mgs a day from all sources. Only a small percentage of CoQ10 ingested is actually absorbed which is why it is much better if possible to concentrate on the efficiency of our organs and systems to produce it.
Nattokinase is a good enzyme and can be very beneficial in helping clean your arteries...provided it is the right sort. There are a number of different forms on the market many of which are not approved by the FDA in the US.
When we researched this ingredient the only quality form that we could find that was approved by the FDA is called Nattozimes and is produced by the National Enzyme Company in the USA.
We now use this in both our Total Balance Premium and Cardio-Klenz.
Why are some forms of Nattokinase not approved by the FDA?
The simple answer is how they are produced.
All forms of Nattokinase are produced using fermentation bio-technology. The reason why most forms of Nattokinase are not approved is that they use bacteria as part of the fermentation process. This can potentially produce some unwanted bacteria which is why the FDA will not approve these forms of Nattokinase.
However, National Enzyme Co use fungi in which to produce their Nattokinase. It is a more expensive process but is 100% safe and is approved by the FDA.
So, if you are using a Nattokinase supplement and you are not buying it from Xtend-Life make sure that you establish that it is a form which is produced from fungi or easier still is Nattozimes from the National Enzyme Company.
Also, it should be in an enteric coated tablet not a capsule. This enzyme is very sensitive and needs to be protected in this form.
I remember reading something from you a while back regarding CoQ10 and SAMe.
You mentioned that if you had to choose between the two,
you would pick the SAMe. I wondered about that at the time and could you elaborate on SAMe, what it is, where it comes from and why it a good thing.
I checked around to see who offers it and found Life Extension does. What I really want to know is,in the info at the end of their page they mention "do not take SAMe if you are suffering from Bipolar Disorder."
Wow.That shocked me. I am not suffering from any mood disorders but was wondering what does the SAMe do to a persons mood that we should be concerned? I see it is supposedly beneficial for mood stabilization. I have never had any mood disorders and don't want to start now.
Could something be created by taking SAMe. I don't take
very many meds, toporol for hypertension and your Multi
Xtra and some Acai Berry.. I just started taking some COQ10 daily as I am 63 and my wife takes it due to her statin drug, I thought I would add it to my regime.
Thanks
Ron
SAMe is one of the most important nutrients in the body. It is a methylator and is very beneficial for both the brain and heart as it helps prevent the build up of homocysteine which is implicated in heart attacks.
It is actually beneficial for people with bi-polar...if taken in sensible quantities. It will help reduce depression BUT...in the case of those with bi-polar it can go from depression to manic if the doses are to high. This is what the LEF would have been referring to.
At the levels that we have in Total Balance there is no such risk even for those suffering from Bi-polar disorders. If however they were already taking SAMe in another supplement then they would be advised to check with their physcian to ensure that the daily dose rate was within suitable levels.
CoQ10 is a great nutrient. We have it in TB. However, it is generally not necessary to supplement with extra if you are taking the full dose of TB because in addition to the CoQ10 that it contains it has other precursors that will help your body produce more of it. But...there is no harm in taking some extra within reason.

Actually I think that you may be getting me mixed up with an article written by someone else. I haven't written an article about jet lag...but, it could be a good idea to do it. I do a lot of long haul travel but never have a jet lag problem. I can't see how CoQ10 specifically would help though.
