A Meeting with Prof. Dr. A Munem

My friend and Chief Researcher, formulator for Xtend-Life,  Prof. Dr. A Munem Daoud is certainly a remarkable man. However, my meetings with him can be quite frustrating because he has so much to share and I can only absorb and act on so much.  My last full day with him was last Thursday where we discussed some new enhancements we are working on.

It would be great to have a ‘magic wand’ which I could wave and ‘presto’ we have a new product which will achieve this or that objective.  I would love to develop all the formulas which Munem conceives but that would be impractical to attempt. He loves working on solutions for health problem by developing special formulas.  The more complex and difficult the problem, the better!

It is my job to assess which ones we give priority to and decide whether we ‘upgrade’ an existing formula or develop a new one due to new scientific evidence.  Wherever possible we endeavor to upgrade existing formulas as that represents the best outcome for our customers not only from an efficacy stand point but also value for money.

I still get excited as Munem explains to me the benefits each ‘adjustment’ brings to the products.  After almost 9 years that level of excitement has not diminished.  In fact, it has increased.  Back in 1999 I would sit down with Munem for a day and be lucky to absorb 5% of what he was saying as it was way over my head.  A lot of it still is, but maybe I am now up around 80% in terms of understanding.  Still learning every day and have a long way to go.

One thing that I have learnt though is the obstacles and time involved on getting a new product to market are always much greater than I anticipate.  There are always problems in sourcing new ingredients of the right quality and potency.  I remember recently that we had to communicate with suppliers of one ingredient in seven countries until we finally secured a supply which was approved by Prof. Munem.

Prof. Munem has to sign off on all ingredients that are selected and it is not his concern about how much they cost.  It never has been and never will be as our brief to him has always been ‘no compromises’.

There are some exciting developments in the pipeline for the next year or two, but I can’t give any details at this stage.  I have been censured so many times by our General Manager Kane Matthews who is also one of my son’s about under-estimating the time and resources required when we do these new developments…so, I will keep quiet and finish this diary entry by saying that our existing products are still more advanced than others in the market place anyway.

In respect of the provision of natural health products one cannot fail to admire the efforts that have and are being made to secure the most effective and beneficial products. Much of the potential problems such as heart, prostate , brain, etc are catered for. However in studying the internet for several years

I note that repeatedly the subject of graviola(and derivatives) comes to the fore in the treatment of cancer.

A close friend in fact has been completely cured (prostate cancer) with a regime of .....Green Teas, Graviola(rainforest) and combined with the dreaded Radiotherapy .
Which cured him I can't say but he is now very well. My question is how likely is it for Extend Life to deal with this problem (and possibly produce a product) if you consider it worthwhile, especially as Graviola is claimed to be 1000x more times effective than radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

It is most reassuring to note that you have such a dedicated professional team at EXTEND LIFE
.

Thank you for your kind words James,

We don't use graviola at this stage simply because there is not enough scientific data to support its use. There have not been any humans studies on graviola to determine safety, dosage etc.

Some of the claims that are made on the internet about its cancer 'curing' abilities are way over the top and based on wild speculation. I do know that some laboratory experiments against cancer cells have been promising but these preliminary results are a far cry from what some people are claiming.

There are similarities with many plants and a lot of these have anti-cancer properties so it is likely that graviola does as well. However, for the moment we will stick with those anti-cancer substances that we currently use and which have solid scientific backing.

As an example, it may have been the green tea that helped your friends prostate cancer. It is difficult to know because rarely are these substances taken in isolation.

Query on "Total Balance":

Dear Warren,

This is my 1st time to make and send sort of comments or query on your product named Total Balance. I have placed
order with 9 bottles of Green Lipped Mussel Powder on 3rd Aug and received them on 8th August. Just starting to take it. As I applied for Xtend-Life Loyaty Programme, I will receive some number of Total Balance formula next time. I have a query on the ingredients in the product.
Is Coenzyme Q10 contained in Total Balance! If it is contained in it, what form is it contained? Is it in powder form or liquid form? Please let me tell you why I am concerned with this. Because Dr. Peter Langsjopen, MD, Cardiologist, Medical School of the Uni of Texas(USA)
told me: "There's a 90% chance you may be taking the WRONG form of CoQ10 and getting little benefits. Here's why: If your CoQ10 is a powder-Toss it out! CoQ10 can be manufacturered in either a liquid or a powder form. Many supplement companies trying to make a quick buck, choose the powder route-simply because powder is cheaper to produce. The problem is: Laboratory studies show up to 99% of most powdered CoQ10 is not absorbed by your body."

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best Regards,

Hi Seiji,

Yes, CoQ10 is included in our Total Balance. CoQ10 is made two ways. One is by yeast fermentation and the other is synthetic. We only use the fermentation product manufactured in Japan,

The synthetic powder on its own is indeed poorly assimilated. The fermenatation form is better and better mimics the CoQ10 in the body.

Actually CoQ10 is manufactured as a powder but as it is oil soluble some manufacturers incorporate it into an oil and put that in a soft gel. CoQ10 is better absorbed when combined with an oil. This is why when included in a tablet there should be other oil based ingredients which combine with it to improve its efficacy. This is why we use Phosphatidyl Choline and the phosphate form of some of the vitamins. These are oil based and help improve the bio-availability of the CoQ10.

Additionally we enteric coat the tablets which protects the CoQ10 as it passes through the stomach.

By the way, a high proportion of CoQ10 whether it is delivered in oil or powder form is not bio-available, so the statement about 99% not being absorbed is somewhat out of context.

In Total Balance we include a number of other ingredients to also help your body increase its own production of CoQ10.
